Prepare ice

Check ingredients

Before you start, check that you have all the ingredients. This might be quite obvious, but some people tend to forget this one important step. Finding out that you forgot to buy the bittering hops after you’ve got 20 liters of wort on the boil could be quite frustrating. Also, make sure that you have lots of sanitiser.

Draw water

If the water in your area is heavily chlorinated, it would be best to prepare your brew water in advance so as to allow the chlorine to evaporate. This way, you can be sure that you’ll be producing cleaner beer and without chlorine flavor.

First-time brewers may not notice the difference, but every little aspect could affect the quality of the beer.

Check equipment

Check if your equipment is ready for use. This is especially true if it has been a while since you brewed. Check to see if the equipment is clean and if anything is broken. Also, inspect fragile items like the hydrometers and glass thermometers as they can easily break without you knowing.

If you have been careful during your last brewing session and have cleaned the apparatus before storing it, then it should be fine.

However, it was the Sumerians who made an effort to write down these recipes. Since very little among the Sumerians were able to read and write, they would sing these recipes to Ninkasi, the beer goddess.

Ancient times

Nothing stays the same during the early civilization. While other rise into power, some were killed or assimilated. Because of this, changes among the laws were also made.

During the ancient times, the Pilgrims agreed to build a brewery upon reaching the Plymouth Rock. This was done so it would be easier for them to make more alcohol when their supplies got low.

Mass production of alcoholic beverages wasn’t done until the age of the Industrial Revolution, which was in the 1700s. Here, thermometers and hydrometers were developed which aided with the brewing process. These tools allowed them to create quality beverages and made the process a lot easier.

The process of home brewing was brought to a whole new level thanks to Louis Pasteur, a French microbiologist who explained the effects of yeast in the fermentation process. Everything seems to be going well, but then times changed. The Prohibition Act was passed in the United States, making it illegal to brew and drink alcohol. And since no one could buy alcohol outside, a group of brewers came up with the Moonshine and Bathtub Gin to address the people’s cravings.

Eventually, the need for grape juice became evident. Grape growers decided to acquire more fields in order to sustain with the growing demand.

In 1933, the act was repealed. However, this only legalized home brewing wine. Brewing beer remained illegal until 1979, when President Jimmy Carter signed the bill which lifted the ban.

Purchase a starter kit

Prepare the ingredients

Surprisingly, beer involves a simple process. It’s basically just water with malt.

Brewing the beer

Brewing beer is easy, especially if you’re using a starter kit. Follow these steps and start brewing your own beer.

Brewing – This process takes about 2 hours.

Start off by cleaning and sterilizing your equipments. Dissolve the brew in 2 to 4 liters of hot water then add in 1 Kg of dextrose or sugar. Then, put 10 liters of cold water in the fermenter, add the hot mixture and mix it well.

Top it up to 23 liters. When the temperature reaches below 30°, sprinkle it with brewer’s yeast.

Fermenting – This process takes about a week

This is where the magic happens! After adding the yeast, you can now seal the fermenter. Remember to partially fill the airlock with boiled, cooled water.

Allow the brew to ferment for a week, letting it stay at about 20 to 22°. Once you notice that the brew clears and the airlock stops bubbling, set aside for 48 hours. After this, you beer is ready for bottling.

Bottling

Make sure to sterilize all the caps and bottles. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar to each bottle. Fill the bottles, leaving 40mm from the top.

Cover the bottles and tilt each bottle for a few times in order to dissolve the sugar. Keep them in a warm place for about 5 days, then transfer them to a cooler place and let it stay for another 5 days. Leave it alone for another week. After this, you are free to enjoy your very own beer.
